Mixing patterns, and bringing in pops of color with accessories are all ways to tie the colors together. Another good rule is to keep the guys neutral, (since we all know how much they love this kind of stuff). Here's a great example of how to make it work
The little girl is the base of this pallet, the navy is picked up in moms dress and dads shirt. the turquoise is picked up in moms necklace, and the coral in the polka dots in moms shirt and wedges. As you can see they've mixed the polka dots and stripes, and kept dad neutral. Another element that's great to add is texture, which the lace in the dress adds. Texture is especially fun in the cooler months when you can layer sweaters, scarves, and other fun accessories. My biggest piece of advice is don't get too "matchy", the jeans and same colored shirt days are moving on out, don't worry if the colors don't match perfectly, you want to show each persons personality and a variation of pattern, color and texture are all important to making it look great!
